Not every beach suits little ones — and Pelion has exactly the right kind. Papa Nero and Agios Ioannis are long beaches with a gentle entry into the water and tavernas right along the shore. Kala Nera and Platanias are shallow and easy, while Chorto and Milina are quiet and family-friendly. Shade, restrooms and ice cream are always close by.
- Tip: some of the beaches are pebbly rather than sandy — water shoes for the kids will make the day far more pleasant.
The steam train — the big hit
There isn't a child who doesn't light up over "the Moutzouris," Pelion's historic steam train. It climbs slowly between stone bridges, forests and mountain views, from Ano Lechonia station up to the village of Milies — a ride that's an experience all its own. It's best to book seats in advance (the train runs mainly on weekends and in season).
Nature, legends and a little magic
Pelion is the land of the Centaurs — which sounds wonderful to kids. Take them to see the giant plane tree in the square of Tsagarada, said to be around a thousand years old; walk a short forest trail; and stop by a waterfall. Everything is close, easy, and on a scale that suits little legs.
